Hello, My name is James Boran. I am the owner and primary instructor at Boran's Jiu-jitsu. I hold a 5th-degree black belt. Boran's BJJ Academy is an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and a United States Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation certified academy. I grew up in New York with my parents , 3 brothers and 1 sister. My athletic focus as a teen and young adult was on football. I played linebacker in the Ivy League for Columbia University. Then was signed as a free agent by the New York Jets in 1979. While in college, I began to study martial arts, starting with Tae Kwon Do, receiving a black belt. In 1983, I moved to California searching for a more effective martial arts technique and studied Hapkido for four years. One day, I met a student from the Hapkido school who had been training with the Gracie's from Brazil. Although I outweighed him by 70 pounds, he quickly tied me in a knot! I instantly knew I wanted to learn what this guy knew. I immediately set up a private lesson with Professors Rorion and Royler Gracie. What a great experience! After that initial lesson, I never looked back! I began taking weekly private lessons with Royce and Rickson Gracie. I received my blue and purple belts from Professors Royce, Rorion, and Rickson Gracie. I received my brown and black belts from Professor Joe Moreira. In doing so, I became a part of an elite group of martial artists, the Dirty Dozen. The Dirty Dozen is a nickname given to the first 12 Americans who received their black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In 2000, with many years of athletic competitions and martial arts training under my belt, I decided to open Boran's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Costa Mesa. I wanted to share my love for this sport with men, women, and children. Boran's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy provides individuals and families with excellent instruction in a safe and friendly environment. Thanks for getting to know a little about me.
